Several years ago I received a letter from Julian Jackson asking for
financial assistance for his boxing program. Julian has dedicated
his life to working with what many would call our high risk
children. He is the jewel of St. Thomas. Of course I said yes to
Julian Jackson. His needs are modest. He is respectful to all
people. He is doing a great service to the people of the Virgin
Islands.
I have never asked Julian for his support. I am running because
Julian Jackson said he wanted to support me for public office. He
told me of the hundreds who ‘talked the talk’ about caring and
assisting, I was one of the very few who ‘walked the walk’ and cared
enough to act. He said we needed a fighter in Washington to fight
for our children.
I never asked Jose “Tony” Rosario, President of the Virgin Island
Boxing Federation, for his support. I never asked Carolyn Wattley,
Secretary for the Federation, for her support. They work with
Julian with the same unfailing energy and tireless enthusiasm for
the children of the Virgin Islands. Tony and Carolyn saw my
qualifications, watched me in action on behalf of the Virgin
Islands, and then on their own initiative began supporting me and
helping me get to Washington to fight for our children.
I never asked Reggie Perry for his support. Reggie has known me for
several years. He knew how much more the Delegate could do. He
knew I never said ‘it’s not my job’ but instead I always offered to
help. He knew my plan to put grant writers and financial compliance
experts on my Federal staff would bring hundreds of millions of
dollars of Federal spending to the Virgin Islands. He knew how much
our WAPA bills were hurting all of us and our economy, and of my
meetings with the US Department of Interior, and that my plan to cut
our WAPA bills in half would work. He knew my plan to get us the
right to vote for President before the next election could happen.
He knew it was my discussions with Senators Corzine and Lieberman
were the ones that put forth the core ideas that ultimately saved
social security. He knew I could have saved us millions on our bond
issues and other finance issues. He knew my strategy to save our
EDC program had the better chance of success. And he knew that I
knew how to effectively marshal and utilize all available resources
and support to work for us to get our legislation passed in
Congress. He saw the Delegate’s unfortunate strategy of telling
Congress ‘we steal all the money’ in order to get the CFO bill
passed both failed to get it passed, and, worse, jeopardized all of
our other Federal funding. Reggie knew my qualifications and
respected my capabilities, and asked to support me and to do
whatever he could to get me to Washington to fight for the Virgin
Islands.
Right up to the filing deadline I was hopeful I would not have to
run for Delegate. It would be very costly for me, both financially
and to my quality of life. If elected, my income will be taxed at
full US rates, not the lower EDC rates (the one consolation being my
extra tax payments will go to the USVI general fund). But more
important, rather than being able to live out my life peacefully
here in the USVI, America’s Paradise, I’ll be back in the ‘rat race’
I thought I was leaving behind. So in a final attempt to not run,
I sent a letter to the Delegate’s office, outlining an agenda for a
meeting with her. I asked to discuss the issues I would have liked
to see her pursue- cutting our electric bills in half, getting our
public employees their back pay, getting us the right to vote for
President of the United States for the next election, saving social
security, and utilizing all available resources to restore our
funding and our economy. After several weeks of silence, however,
it was clear there would not even be a response to my request, and
so I said yes to Reggie, Julian, and Tony and entered the election
as Candidate for Delegate to Congress.
Over the last four years I have contributed to many organizations
and causes in the USVI, and I have never asked for their support,
nor is it my nature to do that. In fact, there are organizations
and individuals I continue to support who do not support me, as I
respect the good work they are doing for the Virgin Islands, and I
respect their right to political choice. Those that are supporting
me do so voluntarily, out of their sense of public service. They
volunteer not for my benefit, but for the love of the Virgin
Islands. In return, support the hopes and efforts of Reggie,
Julian, Tony, Carolyn, Lynn, La-Toya, Alex, Barbara, and the many
thousand Virgin Islanders supporting me as their candidate of choice
to be their Delegate to Congress.
Why do I run for Congress? F.T.L.O.T.V.I!!! Better days are
coming!!!
